UPDATED: CNN Suspends Roland Martin for David Beckham Super Bowl Tweet

(Updated 2/8)

CNN contributor Roland S. Martin has been suspended from the news network in light of his Super Bowl tweet suggesting you smack anyone at your party into the David Beckham underwear ad. From their statement:

“Roland Martin’s tweets were regrettable and offensive. Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated. We have been giving careful consideration to this matter, and Roland will not be appearing on our air for the time being.”

The full story can be found on The Huffington Post.

Earlier this week…

A few people brought this Tweet during the Super Bowl to our attention yesterday and this morning:

He has since backpedaled, saying that his Tweet wasn’t anti-gay in a series of Tweets this morning:

Fam, let me address the issue that some in the LGBT community have raised regarding some of my Super Bowl tweets yesterday. I made several cracks about soccer as I do all the time. I was not referring to sexuality directly or indirectly regarding the David Beckham ad, and I’m sorry folks took it otherwise. It was meant to be a deliberately over the top and sarcastic crack about soccer; I do not advocate violence of any kind against anyone gay, or not. As anyone who follows me on Twitter knows, anytime soccer comes up during football season it’s another chance for me to take a playful shot at soccer, nothing more

So you’re not advocating violence but it’s okay to smack around your friend for being a soccer fan now?

Media watchdogs GLAAD point out a history of past anti-gay rhetoric from Martin and have a petition calling for CNN to fire him. Daily Kos also covers his past homophobia.

We’re still mulling this over, but want to ask you…

  1. Why is there no option for anti-gay, anti-soccer moron?

  2. Really, Roland? If it was just a crack at soccer, then why is it directed to a “dude”? Is it okay if a woman was excited about it? I’m not suggesting the guy is a homophobe, he probably doesn’t have a problem with gays, but I AM suggesting he accept the fact that he (like millions of other men in our culture) only know how to insult other men in homosexual terms. While that doesn’t make you anti-gay, it makes you a neanderthal.

  3. He is an idiot who would sell out his mother for a buck! There is no place in journalism for a creep like this other than on Faux News. He does not belong on CNN. What is more disturbing is that CNN doesn’t see this!

  4. There is definitely homophobia, which he probably didn’t even notice, in his tweet. But I don’t think his intention was to be homophobic –if that makes sense. They guy is just a moron who was saying something he thought was funny to get a reaction without thinking about what could be construed from what he said.

    • I agree, he is just a homophobic moron. Unfortunately, he is a homophobic moron in a position of some power, being a nationally viewed journalist…and that ain’t so good. It is time to send a very serious message to all people in power who cannot avoid abusing minorities. Fire him with cause. This man knows the damage in lives his, and others, homophobia costs daily. There is no longer room for this kind of attitude. Young gays are killing themselves, yet this man does nothing but make jokes at Gay’s expense…perhaps not so funny. And perhaps not so harmless. There is no reason to take a chance on whether he is harmless or not…fire him now.

  5. I’ve always wondered who that little sniping weasel was on CNN, holding the line via race in almost all his comments. Now I find out it’s Rola nd Martin. First of all, when it comes to soccer, he should know that soccer bashers are passe from the 70’s and 80’s. Most sportswriters and broadcasters accept that soccer has taken its place in the sports landscape, and knowledgeable wags will agree that soccer has a chance to overtake ice hockey as America’s third most popular sport. When it comes to politics, this guy is about as flat along racial lines as anyone I’ve seen on TV. Third, he can’t even speak correctly. I wonder if he has a journalism degree that would have qualified him to be on TV news casts? This guy adds about as much to CNN as Sara Palin does at Fox — NOT MUCH.

  6. He’s just looking for sensation
